Reel Artists Film Festival Gala

Having worked in the fashion industry, I’ve met a lot of wonderful people and am often invited to a variety of events. Most recently I was invited to the opening night gala of the Reel Artists Film Festival. The event was held at the Telus Centre / Royal Conservatory right next to the ROM. The building just underwent a significant face lift and the result is absolute beauty. The large auditorium is finished in thin would paneling from floor to ceiling and is acoustically nothing short of perfection.

The opening gala included a screening of the film Jean Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child. It was a beautiful documentary about him that painted his brilliance in a very intimate way.

More importantly; the food. Upon entering the event, mini sandwiches with Basquiats “crown” signature were offered to people at the screening. The brie and prosciutto paninis were good and tided the crowd over until the film ended and the real food was served.

The selection of hors d’oeuvres offered after the screening was more than I’ve typically seen at similar events. Chicken pate served with candied ginger on rye crackers, Asiago stuffed arancini, Mini samosas and spring rolls, Warm Cucumber and Cauliflower soup shots, prosciutto stuffed phyllo pouches and seared scallops topped with olive tapanade and tuna tartare ice cream cones. Dessert was also served, but I was so touched, tired and full that I could barely even eat a caramel ganache truffle.

If you’re able to see the movie, be sure to do so. Its inspiring beyond words.
